WPML Media Translation
WPML (WordPress Multilingual) provides the “Media Translation” feature as part of its plugin suite, allowing you to translate media files such as images, videos, and audio files in a multilingual website. With Media Translation, you can provide localized media content for each language version of your site. Here’s how you can use WPML Media Translation:
- Install and activate WPML and the Media Translation add-on: Begin by installing and activating WPML on your WordPress website. Make sure you also activate the Media Translation add-on, which is included with WPML’s Multilingual CMS package.
- Configure the Media Translation settings: In the WPML settings, navigate to the “Media Translation” section. Here, you can customize the behavior of media translations. You can choose to either duplicate media files for each language or share the same media across all languages. Select the option that best suits your multilingual site requirements.
- Translate existing media files: After configuring the settings, you can proceed to translate your existing media files. In the WordPress Media Library, you’ll find a list of all your media files. Locate the media file you want to translate and click on the “+” icon next to it. This will create a new row for the translation of that media file.
- Upload translated media files: In the translation row, you can upload the translated version of the media file. WPML allows you to either upload a new file or select an existing translated file if it already exists in your media library. Upload the translated media file for the specific language, ensuring it matches the content of the original file.
- Link media translations: Once you’ve uploaded the translated media file, WPML will automatically link it to the original media file. This association ensures that when visitors view your website in the corresponding language, they will see the appropriate media content. WPML handles the display of the correct media file based on the active language.
- Translating alt text and captions: WPML also allows you to translate the alt text and captions associated with media files. You can enter the translations directly in the Media Library interface for each language version. This ensures that alternative text and captions are displayed correctly in different languages.
By utilizing WPML’s Media Translation feature, you can provide localized media content to enhance the multilingual experience of your website visitors. This ensures that images, videos, and other media elements align with the language and context of each language version. Please note that the Media Translation feature in WPML is designed primarily for translating media files themselves. If you want to translate the text content within images (e.g., text overlays), you may need to use an image editing tool to create translated versions of those images.Always refer to the official WPML documentation and support resources for detailed instructions and troubleshooting specific to your WPML setup and version.
